Lets say you're trying to get free traffic for a website on skin care.

Everyone knows that if you don't appear on the front page of Google,
you're dead in the water as far as natural search traffic goes.

Lets see what we're up against.

Heading over to Google and punching in the phrase "skin care" (with
quotes, since we're searching for an exact phrase match), shows
something like the following:
Over 31.5 million results for Skin Care on Google!

31.5 million results!

That means, to get your page anywhere near the top-spot for the phrase
`skin care'... you're going to have to optimize your site to where it
shuttles past 31,499,999+ others.

That's a lot of sites... and far more competition than I'd be
comfortable with!

And what about Pay Per Click traffic? Don't take it from me- this is
what Google admit to charging per click...
Up to $4.96 per click on Google Adwords for a #1 ranking for Skin Care

Up to $4.96 per click! These are average click prices, by the way - to
get the top-spot on the Google Adwords side bar, you could be looking
at anywhere from $10 - $20 per click!

So what's the solution?

I look for a completely different set of keywords. `Skin care' is way
too broad for me. I'm not going to even attempt to compete with the big
cosmetic companies and their multi-million dollar advertising budgets
for a top ranking on that keyword. And neither should you.

So lets build a brand new list of keywords related to skin care.
Getting these keywords is easy. Google themselves offer an easy way to
download a complete list of keywords. You can see this tool for
yourself at https://adwords.google/select/KeywordToolExternal

Take a look:

In this case, we just typed in `skin care'... let Google generate a
list of related keywords... and hit `download'.
Google lets you download up to 800 keywords with a single click

So, now you've got a huge list of keywords. Great.

But the question is - what are you supposed to do with it?

Here's an example of a typical list I found for `skin care'... 1,000
solid search phrase keywords.

The problem is... just like `skin care', many of these keywords have
millions of competing results in Google.

All we're interested in are the search phrases that return as few
results as possible... whilst still having a ton of search traffic.
After all, there's little point ranking high (in either natural search
traffic, or pay-per-click) for a phrase that no-one is actually typing
into Google!

So here's what you'd do...

You'd sift through each of your keywords, one by one, and plonk each of
them into a Google search to gauge your competition. The number of
results gives you an indication of how many different websites contain
that precise phrase... and therefore... shows you exactly how many
other websites you need to zoom past to get seen by your audience.

Lets take the next keyword on the list and try it. If there are fewer
than 5,000 results in Google, then bingo - we've found a keyword phrase
(I call these `search niches') that will be child's play to dominate...
and with a little optimization on my web pages, should easily get us on
the first page of Google results.

So lets check it... the next keyword on the list is "skin care
products".

Nope! 4.98 million results. Way off! Remember, we're looking for fewer
than 5,000 page results in Google. That shows us our keyword phrase
will be easy to optimize a page for because 5,000 is a lot less
competition than 4.98 million!

(You could even go lower than 5,000 if you wanted, but I find this is a
good ballpark for knowing you can easily move into the #1 hotspot on
Google with very little effort)

So, we'd move onto the next keyword and if that didn't cut it, the
next... then the next... until we found one with fewer than 5,000
return results.

Unfortunately, that's often a lot harder than it sounds. Lets pluck a
few random (and completely obscure!) search phrases from our keyword
list and paste them into Google to see how we fare... (remember-- when
it comes to specific key phrases, we need to wrap each search phrase in
quotes, so Google will search for that exact phrase, as-is):

`shiseido skin care"... extremely specific, and still 17,000 more
results than we need!

"green skin care"... FAR too much competition... over 72,000 results!

"glycolic acid skin care"... yikes, 92,000 results... over 87,000 more
than we want!

As you can see, even the most obscure, highly specific keyword phrases
have unfathomable levels of competition.

Why?

In 2008, Google indexed its one trillionth web page. That's trillion,
or written as a number, an almighty 1,000,000,000,000 unique web pages!

To give you an idea of how big that is, imagine that each web page is a
unique intersection on a map. If you put all those pages together, the
map would be...

50,000 times bigger than the United States!

And you know what's more?

Over 148,000 brand new domain names are registered every day. That's
not individual pages - that's just the number of , ,
, , and .us names, and excludes all of the country specific
names like .co.uk for the UK and .au for Australia.

In other words... almost every market, niche and demographic you could
possibly think of is already online.

You can see why getting to the top of any major search engine can seem
almost impossible... and trying to manually filter through a keyword
list of thousands of phrases to find that small handful of profitable,
low-competition search niches is an incredibly labor intensive process.

I mean, think about how long it takes to go through each phrase...

2 seconds to copy the keyword phrase from your text file

5 seconds to point your browser to Google

1 second to paste it

2 seconds to wrap it in quotes and click `search'

2 seconds to wait for the page to load and check the `Google found X
results' blurb

2 more seconds to delete that keyword off your list and move on to the
next

That's a conservative 14 seconds per keyword. In other words, on a
keyword list of 20,000 individual phrases...

It'd take you 77 HOURS of non-stop clicking, copying
and pasting... PER keyword list to uncover just a few
niches that meet your `low competition' criteria!

Allowing for food stops... bathroom breaks... limited sleep each night
and just a couple of hours rest per day away from the computer... you'd
be working a solid 10 hours a day for over a WEEK just to uncover a few
search niches that are worth dominating!

Is it any wonder most marketers fail to bend the search engines to
their will, and give up before making their first dollar?

And don't forget - that's just one keyword list. A good marketer has
anywhere from 10 to 50 of these lists on the go at any one time. And
once they've found the niche, they still need to go out and build the
page that's optimized for that particular key search phrase to jump to
the top of Google (or anywhere close).

Up to now, that was really the only way to do it. Roll up your sleeves,
pour yourself some stiff coffee, get to work and hope for the best.
Either that or pay for expensive programmers (like I wound up doing!)
to create `simulators' that would emulate the copy and pasting for you.

But thankfully - there is now another way.

Instead of targeting 1 niche per month... using my

click a link that appears in the top 3 results on the page.

means, even though it's searched for, on average, once every 30
seconds... there are less than 5,000 pages out of well over a trillion
indexed in Google that actually contain that phrase!

It's at #2 on Google, for an exact phrase match. 30-60% of the clicks
that come from Google go to the top 3 listings on the very first page.
This is #2!

And the page that's listed... is just an article posted to a free
article directory! Look at the link, it goes to ezinearticles, a
free website where visitors can post articles. That means, to get to
this #2 spot, all the marketer did was whip up a free article
containing the keywords "skin care acne control" and voila - a magic
top-spot listing at Google!

Now, granted, that's for an exact phrase match.

Not many people will actually bother typing "quotes" around their
search phrase, so you might be thinking... what kind of traffic can you
expect to see from regular Google searches?

Here's the kicker...

Even without the quotes... the keyword phrase
can often wind up on the first page in Google...
In this case, we're within the top 5!

The URL contains the keyword. `Skin care acne control' is the keyword.
At the time of writing, SkinCareAcneControl, and are all
available for less than $10. Stuffing your keywords within your domain
name is a cheap and easy way to boost your search engine magnetism.

The landing page content is keyword dense. If you pull up the complete
page, you'll see that the title of the article is "Skin Care Acne
Control Formula - Advice For Occasional Breakouts and More Serious
Cases". The keyword makes up the very first portion of the title! It's
